Mai i te papa ki te rangi — from the earth to the sky
The tuba re-imagined by Ryan Peni
Where the breath of the land becomes sound, and the voice of the sky is heard through brass.
Mai i te papa ki te rangi — from the earth to the sky — is a sonic journey that bridges traditional Māori soundscapes with modern instrumentation.
The sounds you hear — from the haunting spin of the pūrerehua, to the ancestral call of the pūtātara, to the waiata of Pokarekare Ana — are created live using : the tuba, and occasionally the ocarina to mimic bird calls.
The only exception is the use of a pre-recorded drum loop, added to ground the rhythm and carry the energy forward.
As our journey begins, close your eyes and let your imagination take over.
Sit back, relax and feel the sounds of Aotearoa.
